Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition in which hair follicles are attacked by the immune system, causing round patches of hair loss.
Although it most commonly affects the scalp, it may also involve the eyebrows, eyelashes, beard, and other body hair. Sudden onset is one of its characteristic features.
